Can I do paid user tests on my phone?
Some panels run paid user tests on a phone through their own app: UserTesting (iOS 14 or later, Android 10 or later) and Userbrain (its recorder app) do. Inflight studies run on a desktop or laptop in Google Chrome, because they record a shared browser tab, and there is no phone app yet. Surveys and many Prolific studies work on a phone.
Panels that run phone tests
| Platform | Phone tests | How |
|---|---|---|
| UserTesting | Yes | Its app, iOS 14+ or Android 10+ |
| Userbrain | Yes | Its recorder for iOS or Android |
| Userlytics | Yes | Desktop or mobile |
| Prolific | Depends on the study | Browser |
Why Inflight is desktop only
An Inflight study records the single browser tab you are testing in, plus your voice, and nothing else. Chrome on a desktop or laptop can share one tab reliably; phones cannot without recording the whole screen, which Inflight does not do. A Chromebook counts as a laptop.
If you only have a phone
Surveys and short research studies are the realistic option; see user testing vs paid surveys. A library computer will not work for recorded tests either, since you need somewhere quiet and a microphone.
Questions people ask next
- Can I use an iPad?
- Not on Inflight. Studies need desktop Chrome's tab sharing.
- Will Inflight add phone studies?
- There is no phone app yet. Applicants are asked which devices they have, so the panel knows the demand.
- Does the test product have to be a website?
- Inflight studies open a product in the browser tab, including designs of mobile apps shown at phone size.
