What do I need to become a paid user tester?

By the Inflight team · Updated

To become a paid user tester you generally need to be an adult, a computer or phone with a microphone, a quiet place to record, and a PayPal account to be paid. Inflight requires that you are 18 or older, live in the United States, and use Google Chrome on a desktop or laptop with a microphone; no experience, webcam or special software is needed.

Inflight's requirements

RequirementInflight
Age18 or older
LocationLive in the United States
DeviceDesktop or laptop (Mac, Windows PC, Chromebook or Linux)
BrowserGoogle Chrome, because studies record a shared tab
MicrophoneRequired; a built-in one is fine
CameraNever used
SpaceSomewhere quiet for 15 to 45 minutes
ExperienceNone. First-time users are the point
PaymentA PayPal account in your own name, connected after approval

Before your first study you verify your identity with a verification provider, connect PayPal, and do a short unpaid practice test. The name, country and date of birth on your PayPal account must match your verified identity.

How other panels differ

  • UserTesting lists minimum computer specs (1 GB RAM, 7 GB free disk, 3 Mbps upload), accepts Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari on a computer, and runs phone tests through its app on iOS 14+ or Android 10+.
  • Userbrain needs its own recorder extension for Chrome, iOS or Android, and a qualification test before paid tests.
  • Userlytics accepts testers from age 16, runs on desktop or mobile, and some studies require a webcam showing your face.
  • Prolific puts applicants on a waitlist and verifies identity, which it says takes about 15 minutes.

Phone-only testers should read can I do user tests on my phone?

Why Chrome and a shared tab

Inflight studies record the browser tab you are testing in, not your whole screen. Chrome is the browser that can share a single tab reliably, which is why it is required for every study. Nothing in other tabs, windows or apps is ever recorded, and no extension is installed.

Questions people ask next

Do I need a webcam?
Not on Inflight. Studies never use your camera. Some other panels require a webcam for specific studies.
Can I use a Chromebook?
Yes. A Chromebook runs Chrome and can share a tab, which is all a study needs.
Can I apply from outside the United States?
Not to Inflight. The panel is for US residents, and your PayPal country and identity evidence must match. Prolific and UserTesting accept participants from more countries.
