How much do user testers make?

By the Inflight team · Updated

User testers are paid per study, not per hour. Each study has a fixed amount set by its length, the kind of study and what the customer needs: a short unmoderated test pays the least, a longer recorded study more, and a scheduled live interview the most. Most people treat it as a few hundred dollars a month at most, because invitations, not your free time, limit how much you can do.

What decides a study's pay

  • Length. A 15 minute test and a 45 minute test are different amounts.
  • Kind. Unmoderated recorded tests pay less per study than scheduled live interviews, which are harder to fill.
  • Who they need. A study that wants a particular profession or a rare kind of customer pays more than one open to everyone.
  • What the customer is paying for. A quick check of one screen costs them less than a whole journey.

On Inflight every study shows its pay and expected time before you start, and a study done in good faith is paid the amount shown even if you got stuck or gave up. Most panels publish no rate at all; the amount is on the study.

Why nobody can promise you an hourly rate

Three things cap your earnings on every panel: how many studies you are invited to, how many screeners you pass, and how many recordings are approved. A profile that matches a lot of studies and recordings that reviewers can use will earn more than the same hours spent on a thin profile. Platforms that advertise hourly figures are usually quoting the pay of one study divided by its length, which says nothing about how often that study comes along.

Inflight does not pretend otherwise: studies are offered as they come up, so none is guaranteed, and availability varies. What we do promise is that the pay is shown before you start and that a study done in good faith is paid in full.

What a month looks like

Some weeks bring two or three studies, some bring none. A full profile on a couple of panels, quick replies to invitations and recordings that reviewers can use are what move the number; wanting more studies does not. Keep it as money on top of something else, and read is user testing a good side hustle? before you count on it.

Getting paid more on any platform

  • Fill in your profile completely and truthfully. Screeners match on it.
  • Talk the whole time. A silent recording is the most common reason a test is not approved.
  • Use a quiet room and a working microphone. Reviewers cannot use what they cannot hear.
  • Answer the questions at the end properly. Short, honest and specific beats long and vague.
  • Take studies promptly; many close once they have enough participants.

Questions people ask next

Does Inflight pay per hour?
No. Each study has a fixed pay shown before you start, with the expected time next to it. A study done in good faith is paid that amount whether you finished every task or not.
Is there a minimum before I can cash out?
On Inflight you can cash out to PayPal once your balance reaches $6.
Can user testing replace a job?
No. Every panel limits how much you can do by how many studies you are invited to. It is money on top of something else.
